ST JOHN’S CHOIR
The choir of St John’s Anglican Church in Dee Why, comprising
soprano, alto, tenor and bass singers, has been a feature of
the Solemn Eucharist
Service on Sunday mornings for many years. The selection of music ranges
from the traditional to more contemporary styles, and while generally
performed with organ accompaniment will, on occasions, be a cappella.
Presently the choir sings at the 9.30 am Service every Sunday, and at
a 6.00 pm Choral Evensong once a month, usually on the Second Sunday.
Additionally the men of the choir sing at Evensong on the Third Sunday
of the month, when the choice of music is largely from Plainsong and Gregorian
sources. A cantor leads the singing when the choir is in recess.
Special Services, such as at Christmas and Easter, are highlights of the
year, when extra singers and musicians are often called upon to augment
the choir. Attendance at weddings and funerals is also requested from
time to time.
Rehearsals lasting up to two hours take place once a week, usually on
a weekday evening, and for up to an hour immediately before each Service.
If more rehearsal time is needed this will be subject to the availability
of members.
Membership is entirely voluntary. Members are mostly from the local area,
but there are some who travel considerable distances every week. Singing
in a church choir needs a firm commitment to regular attendance at Services
and rehearsals, although due consideration will always be given to personal
circumstances.
There are no upper or lower age limits, accepting that at both ends of
the scale there may be factors which preclude a person from joining or
restrict their participation. Musical skills, particularly sight reading,
are obviously desirable but by no means essential. The only requirement
is the ability to sing in tune, and this will be established at a brief
informal audition.
Persons interested in joining the choir are invited to contact the Director
of Music for further information.
