Advent – Count down to Christmas: This marks the start of the Church’s new liturgical year. Advent (from the word adventus meaning “coming”) is a season observed as a time of expectant waiting and preparation both for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas, and for his second coming. Common traditions include the “Advent Calendar” often used for children to count the days ‘til Christmas, and the Advent Wreath used at St John’s. The wreath and candles symbolise the passage of the four weeks of Advent; the first candle is attributed to the Prophets, the second to John the Baptist, the third (the rose coloured candle) to the Virgin Mary, and the fourth the Church. A fifth white candle is for the Christmas birth.
